The helmet is just a standard piece of equipment. You expected to have some sort of cover on any time you outdoors (your hat most of the time, but a helmet if you out in the field or training). At least with me, the first couple times I put my helmet on, it felt like I gotten a bowling ball wrapped around my head, because it was very thick and heavy, but eventually you get used to it. I was in Army ROTC, and in addition to the basic clothing, we were issued an equipment belt that included a pair of suspenders (they have a purpose, I just not sure what) and a couple small packs for extra ammo, a first aid kit, odds and ends (a notepad, pen, flashlight, compass) and two canteen pouches. We were also given canteens for those pouches, of course. We had a large duffel (about 3 H x 1.5 W) full of equipment, including a foam bedroll, a sleeping bag, tent stakes and rope, a large plastic tarp/poncho, rain pants and jacket, a smaller duffel, a backpack, and I don remember what else. We were also issued Class As (dress uniforms) and exercise clothes (Army shirts, shorts, and long pants). I would suggest going to a local Army Surplus store if you can, because they have a lot of equipment there, and you can familiarize yourself with what available. And, might I add, thank you for being willing to join the National Guard and to serve our country. You got at least one person here who appreciates it. I was in ROTC for a semester but wasn able to continue because I had other classes that interfered with it, and even though I didn contract, I got to be around those who had chosen to, as well as the colonel and the major who are both active Guard members (the major was just deployed to Kosovo last month, actually), and I got the deepest respect for those who choose to join.
